Essbase System 11 - What is Typed Measures?

In addition to associating numeric values to measures, in System 11, Text and Date type can be associated. Typed measures enhance analytical capabilities of Essbase.

Here is how to use the "Text" typed measure in Essbase outline.

1. First enable the "Typed Measures" option in Outline properties.

2. Add a Outline member which is used to associate the text value. In this example it is called "sometext". I wanted to associate a color (Red, Green, Blue) to this member. Since it is text type, I made consolidation sign as non-aggregation symbol (^).

3. Even though you can associate or lock and send Text values for this new member "sometext", you must pre-define the Texts and values. I guess, Essbase indirectly stores the numeric values ultimately. So create a list of allowed Text members and values.

4. Next you can Lock and Send or associate a Text (must be pre-defined in the list).

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.
